Double glazing

A double glazing is a glazed wall made of two panes separated by an immobile air thickness called "air gap".

The advantage of double glazing is to allow better thermal insulation, the immobile air layer constituting a good insulator, much better than the glass itself.
In order to improve the thermal insulation, the air space sometimes consists of gas (argon). The air or the gas trapped between the two panes proves to be an excellent insulator, more condensation neither fogging on the windows nor sensation of cold.

The two windows are often the same thickness. Otherwise, we speak of asymmetrical double glazing and it allows a better sound insulation.

The most notable advantages of double glazing are:
  • Thermal and sound insulation,
  • Preservation of heat in winter and savings on the heating bill,
  • No condensation on the windows,
  • Better shock resistance.
